Two Austin women killed in family violence situations

Austin police are investigating the family violence murders of two women. They were killed in separate incidents in South Austin Sunday.

Early Sunday morning police were called to a home on Walton Heath Circle in Southeast Austin for a report of a shooting.

“Upon arrival on scene officers located a woman with obvious signs to her body. They began resuscitation efforts,” said Officer Destiny Winston.

The woman was taken to a hospital, but did not survive.

“There is one person in custody. Those charges are pending. There is no danger to the public. This is a family violence incident. The victim knew the suspect,” said Winston.

Less than 24 hours later a similar event unfolded at The Heights on Congress apartments. Police were called to the home of Maggie Ruiz at 10:40 p.m. She had been stabbed. Austin-Travis County EMS attempted CPR, but the mother of three died at South Austin Medical Center.

Monday, a GoFundMe account was established to assist with funeral expenses.

The creator of the post describes Ruiz as “a loving, devoted wife and mother who worked extremely hard to make sure that her family was provided for and felt loved.” It goes onto say, “Her unexpected death leaves a deep hole in the hearts of all knew this kind soul.”

Like the woman slain on Walton Heath Circle, police say Ruiz’s death was also the result of family violence. Police will not go into specifics about what happened, but do confirm one person is in custody in her case.

Officers have these words of caution to those who may be involved in a violent situation.

“First and foremost your safety is paramount. If you don’t feel safe, call 9-1-1 immediately and get out of the situation. Leave the area until things calm down. Do everything you can to protect yourself from being a victim of family violence. If you know anyone who is in this type of situation don’t let it go unreported. Tell somebody, call police immediately if an emergency exists,” said Winston.

According to the Texas Council on Family Violence 158 Texas women were killed last year in domestic violence situations.
