The president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) has penned a letter in which the celebrity gender surgeon compares bans on experimental child sex changes to racial discrimination and claims that nature lacks a definitive answer to the question of what a woman is.

In the message to WPATH members sent on April 21, Dr. Marci Bowers accuses Republican lawmakers of using “anti-trans-messaging as a winning political posture,” citing recent bans on adolescent sex changes passed in 11 states, as well as Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s emergency declaration that aims to put guardrails around the experimental procedures for people of all ages.

Suggesting that the WPATH Standards of Care 8 is based on the “best available scientific evidence,” Bowers calls for “the public to hear the anguish and the stories of those in pain as a direct result of anti-trans legislation, difficult as this will be to watch—and to pin this pain upon those legislators and policy makers who have inflicted the agony.”
Systematic reviews of the evidence for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for youth have revealed that the research is of extremely poor quality. In light of this, Sweden, Finland, England, France and Norway have all pivoted away from affirmation and medicalization for this vulnerable cohort of young people.
Bowers does not mention the anguish and pain of the detransitioned young people who testify in support of the Republican legislation banning so-called gender-affirming care.
The letter accuses American lawmakers of cherry-picking language from European policies, such as “lack of evidence,” “experimental” and “focus on mental health,” and suggests that the exponential rise in adolescents identifying as transgender “has triggered unprecedented attacks against all things trans.”
The WPATH president recently stated that this enormous surge is partly driven by social contagion, and yet Bowers appears to be opposed to laws that seek to prevent these young people, still in a crucial stage of identity development, from being allowed to undergo irreversible medical procedures.
Bowers is also on record saying that all boys who have their puberty blocked at an early stage will never experience orgasm.
Then, Bowers likens Republican legislators trying to mitigate the harm done to gender-confused children to an attack on women, “black people, brown people, and Asian people,” as well as “Jewish, Muslim, Hindi, Sikh, and true Christian communities.”
“It is an attack on diversity and all of the ideals that diversity holds. It is an attack on us all,” said Bowers.
To conclude the message, Bowers takes aim at Matt Walsh’s 2022 documentary What is a Woman?
Calling the film “trite and condescending,” Bowers, a trans-identified male, criticizes Walsh for leaving out the answer to the question, “as though the answer was obvious.”
“What was cut from the piece was reality,” said Bowers, seemingly without a hint of irony, before going on to claim that “nature lacks a definitive answer to the question.”
Then, after claiming that there is no “biological measure” to indicate who is a woman, the president of the world’s leading transgender health organization makes a valiant attempt at defining woman.
A “woman is what society sees based upon the gender identity the individual projects,” said the trans-identified male who has performed over 2000 vaginoplasty surgeries. “No measure in biology gets it right every time. For every rule, there is an exception.”
“Ultimately, what terrifies conservatives most is that gender diversity is a force of nature that can no longer be contained by religious conscription or enforcement of a gender binary,” concludes Bowers.
